Built in 2008, Bridge 3000, also known locally as Puente Atirantado or the La Plata River Bridge, is a cable-stayed structure carrying Highway PR-5 over the La Plata River between the municipalities of Toa Alto and Naranjito.

The bridge features a main span of 525 feet, flanked by two 262-foot side spans, supported by 96 cable stays anchored to two diamond-shaped concrete towers in a semi-harp design. This design enhances wind resistance for the open-edge girder and floor-beam-supported cross-section, an important consideration in a hurricane-prone region.

Freyssinet USA was contracted to perform repairs and strengthen the complex structure, ensuring enhanced resilience for the local community.

Freyssinet's Mission

La Plata Bridge Project Stay Cable Maintenance in Puerto Rico

Scope of Work

Our work began with the replacement and inspection of the bridge’s anchorage caps, conducting fillet welding, and microcrystalline wax injection to the lower guide pipes. During the ten-month project, we also applied elastomeric cable wrapping to all 96 cables to ensure their longevity.

Freyssinet replaced all the upper neoprene boots (192 total) and performed bearing resetting & PT inspection/vacuum grouting, further enhancing the bridge’s structural integrity and safety for all commuters.

Key Success Factors of the La Plata River Bridge Project

Faced with an approaching election season in Puerto Rico and at the client’s request, Freyssinet successfully expedited the project schedule by increasing manpower and implementing overtime, including weekend work.

Additionally, Freyssinet effectively leveraged its international presence by collaborating closely with its business units in Spain (Freyssinet España) and Mexico (Freyssinet de México) to ensure the project’s timely completion. With operations in over 60 countries and involvement in 10,000 projects annually, Freyssinet consistently utilizes its global network to provide comprehensive, full-service solutions whenever needed.

Project Completion

Once the project was complete, the client praised the team for working collaboratively and completing the work on time with the proper safety standards. The successful and timely completion of the La Plata River Bridge project stands as a testament to our global capabilities, efficiency, and commitment to client satisfaction.
