Concrete Structure Defects

Like most materials, concrete naturally degrades over time due to various factors. To ensure sustainable repairs and extend the lifespan of the structure, it’s crucial to identify the root cause of any structural issues and apply the appropriate remediation techniques.

Concrete issues may stem from initial design or construction flaws, such as inadequate concrete cover thickness relative to environmental conditions, poorly placed or insufficient reinforcement bars, and other quality deficiencies.

Natural aging, often accelerated by fatigue stress.

Exposure to road salts, sea water, moisture, large temperature changes, industrial chemicals, etc.

These can lead to cracking of the concrete or plastic deformation of the steel reinforcement.

Fires, earthquakes, storms, impacts, etc.

Concrete Restoration

A Complete Range of Services

1. Surface Preparation Techniques for Concrete Repair

In the concrete repair process, surface preparation is the first step. A high-quality bond with the substrate requires the right combination of pressures, flows, and nozzles, regardless of the concrete layer’s thickness or reinforcement. Our teams use these techniques to prepare each surface for new material applications:

  • Thorough surface cleaning
  • Effective removal of coatings
  • Elimination of build-up
  • Aggressive stripping to ensure optimal adhesion of new concrete
  • Precise concrete profiling

Hydrodemolition

Hydrodemolition is a specialized concrete repair technique that uses high pressure (HP – up to 20,000 PSI) or ultra-high pressure (UHP - up to 42,000 PSI) water jets to remove damaged or unsound concrete. This method is adaptable to both small localized areas and large-scale applications. Ultra-high pressure water exposes cracks in the concrete surface while breaking down the failing binder around aggregates, leaving the structure intact and ready for repair. The industry recognizes hydrodemolition as the safest and most effective method of concrete removal, and it preserves steel reinforcement without causing damage.
  • Reduction in project duration
  • Prepares steel reinforcement to receive new concrete
  • Reduced health, safety, and environmental risks

Abrasive blasting

Freyssinet brings extensive expertise in the blasting and painting of steel products, commonly referred to as sandblasting. Our qualified concrete inspectors use specialized equipment, including dust collectors, blasting units, vacuum systems, and testing tools, to deliver consistent results across every deck and structural surface. Our experience spans a wide range of coating products, such as solvent-free epoxy, zinc-rich coatings, multi-component systems, polyurethane, vinyl ester, acrylics, and liquid rubber sealing.
  • Removal of existing coatings,
    rust and laitance.
  • Application of high performance
    anti-corrosion industrial coatings

2. Concrete Restoration Techniques

Concrete restoration techniques address the most common forms of structural damage, from surface cracks and spalling to deep deterioration caused by environmental exposure or excessive loading. Freyssinet applies three proven methods depending on the type and severity of the problem:

Trowel-Applied Concrete Repairs

Trowel-applied repairs restore damaged concrete surfaces on reinforced or prestressed structures, recovering both mechanical strength and original appearance. This method is also well-suited for correcting construction defects on concrete surfaces. Repair mortars deliver high mechanical strength and stiffness, making them ideal for structural concrete, including floors and surfaces exposed to traffic.

Freyssinet’s Foreva® REP solution features Foreva® M110 or the fast-setting Foreva® M140 fiber cement repair mortar, with an option to use Foreva® MF 100 fine mortar for a smooth, durable finish.
  • Perfect bonding to existing concrete
  • Suitable for harsh conditions
  • Reduced down time

Dry Shotcrete

Dry shotcrete is a concrete mix applied pneumatically at a high speed, where it adheres and is compacted by the impact of aggregates. This process integrates the shotcrete and base concrete into a single, monolithic slab element. The composition is carefully selected based on the exposure class and strength class of the base concrete.

Dry shotcrete is suitable for reinforcing all types of concrete structural elements and supports reprofiling work in line with industry standards and best practices, with minimal disruption to the structure's operation and its surrounding environment.
  • Full adhesion to substrate
  • Optimal compaction of concrete for better durability
  • Fast and flexible application

Crack Injection

Crack injection is a proven technique for filling structural and non-structural voids in reinforced concrete structures. Applications range from sealing fine cracks in walls and slabs to stabilizing void substrates on a larger scale. Freyssinet delivers comprehensive crack injection services, using high and low-pressure injection equipment alongside advanced vacuum injection technologies. Our solutions feature polymer epoxy and polyurethane resin materials selected to restore load transfer and long-term durability.
  • Prevents moisture and chloride penetration
  • Restores structural integrity
  • Low viscosity material for maximum penetration and reach

3. Surface Protection Techniques

Surface protection is the last stage of a complete concrete repair service. These techniques prevent future damage by stopping water intrusion, slowing carbonation, and shielding the structure from aggressive environmental exposure. Freyssinet offers three protection methods to help extend the lifespan of your property:

Protection Against Moisture Intrusion

Freyssinet specializes in addressing moisture intrusion and water leakage, including solutions for water-retaining structures. Our expertise extends to structural sealing across a wide variety of structures, often in confined and hard-to-reach areas. Our teams are certified in the application of high-performance resins, including acrylic, acrylamide, and polyurethane resin grouts. Each project receives a thorough assessment to identify the cause of water ingress or egress and determine the most effective pressure-injected material and technique to prevent further penetration.
  • Industry proven materials
    from leading suppliers
  • No additional stresses created
    for the structure
  • Turnkey service

Hydrophobic Impregnation

Foreva® Fuge is a water-repellent solution applied as a liquid to concrete surfaces to prevent water penetration and protect the integrity of the structure. The treatment creates a hydrophobic film on the concrete surface that considerably reduces the capillary uptake of dissolved pollutants (salt water, sulphates, carbonic acid, etc.) into the concrete cover, slowing down or preventing their penetration. Foreva® Fuge also prevents damages from freeze/thaw cycles and is specifically recommended for concrete surfaces that will not be painted or coated.
  • Retains breathability of concrete
  • Retains original appearance

Coatings

Protective coatings prevent future damage to concrete structures after repairs are completed, helping last by preserving long-term durability across the building envelope. As part of our comprehensive turnkey repair services, Freyssinet offers anti-carbonation corrosion inhibitors, water intrusion barriers, decorative finishes, and anti-graffiti coatings.
  • Variety of protective coatings
  • Turnkey repair service
