Scope of Work

OMYA Silo Repairs - Freyssinet Conducts waterproofing of the terrace slab supporting the silos

The scope of the OMYA Silo repairs included a turnkey combination of structural repair, protection, and aesthetic restoration services. Freyssinet’s work entailed:

• Repair of segregation and cracking at the top of the silos
• Structural crack repairs using CFRP (carbon fiber–reinforced polymer) fabric and resin systems
• Waterproofing and sealing at the top of the silos
• Rehabilitation of deteriorated slab joints within the structure located atop the silos
• Replacement of failed joint sealants and installation of new expansion joint systems
• Full exterior painting of the silos and selective blending of repaired and existing surfaces
• Complete waterproofing of the terrace slab supporting the silos

All CFRP repairs were protected with compatible coating systems to ensure durability and achieve a consistent, uniform appearance across the silo exteriors.

Project Challenges and Solutions

A key challenge of the Omya Silo repairs project was maintaining productivity within a 24/7 operational facility. The site continuously produces finely ground calcium carbonate (GCC), resulting in persistent airborne dust that significantly complicated surface preparation and material installation. Freyssinet implemented repeated cleaning protocols and strict surface preparation controls to ensure proper adhesion of repair, sealing, and waterproofing materials.

Access constraints further added complexity. Exterior repairs relied heavily on scaffold availability, and delays in scaffold installation and removal impacted work sequencing and productivity. Despite these limitations, the Freyssinet team adapted installation strategies and maintained progress wherever access allowed.

The project was also affected by seasonal weather limitations. While the team made every effort to complete waterproofing and terrace-related activities before cold temperatures set in, installation conditions ultimately required a planned return in 2026 to complete the remaining scope under suitable environmental conditions.

Throughout execution, Freyssinet also coordinated closely with the client to manage scope adjustments, supplemental work items, and material procurement, ensuring the project continued to move forward without major disruptions.
