After concerns grew about the deteriorating condition of the 62-year-old bridge spanning the Hudson, the state of New York proceeded with plans to replace the aging structure.

Once traffic was transferred onto the new bridge, the demolition plan commenced. Part of this plan included the lowering of the suspended center span and one of the anchor spans.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference on the Hudson River to mark the beginning of the gradual process of dismantling the main span of the old Tappan Zee Bridge, underscoring the importance of this significant project to the community.

Heavy-Lifting Scope

Freyssinet and Hebetec supplied the lifting equipment, material, and technical assistance needed to conduct the lowering operation.

After more than a year and five weeks of on-site preparation, four operators oversaw the lift, each pair controlling one half of the lifting system (two pumps/four jacks) installed within the truss.

Constant radio contact and laser monitoring ensured that the bridge maintained tight tolerances in multiple directions during the operation. Once the span made contact with the grillage on the barge below, the former was lashed down and floated away for further disassembly. The strand bundles were then jacked up to clear the channel and allow passage of marine traffic.
