The John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge was built in 1951, connecting Newburyport and Amesbury over the Merrimack River.

Mass DOT’s Whittier Bridge/I-95 Improvement Project was awarded to Walsh Construction Company. Part of the project was to provide a new arch bridge with four travel lanes, a high-speed shoulder, and a breakdown lane in each direction.

Our Mission

Whittier Bridge/I-95 Improvement

Freyssinet designed, fabricated and helped install the hangers. Each hanger consisted of a varying number of parallel and individually coated strands.

After the successful completion of the northbound bridge, preparations were underway to construct a similar southbound version of the bridge. Specialty annular jacks and Isotension technology with the monostrand jacks were employed in the stressing of the hangers.

Technical assistants from multiple Freyssinet subsidiaries collaborated to complete the timely stressing of the stay cable system.

Cable Systems

Freyssinet's stay cables are widely regarded as the most reliable, durable, and technically advanced systems available worldwide and represent the culmination of decades of rigorous research, testing, and development.
