Past Project: The CONSOL Energy Wing Tip Bridge
As autumn settles over the Appalachian landscape, construction sites take on a quieter rhythm. Cooler temperatures, vibrant foliage, and a sense of transition mark the season. For Freyssinet, it’s a time to reflect on one of our most memorable achievements: the CONSOL Energy Wing Tip Bridge in Beckley, West Virginia.
Serving as General Contractor for this landmark project, Freyssinet was honored to contribute to the Boy Scouts of America’s Summit Bechtel Reserve, a national high-adventure base. The Wing Tip Bridge was designed to seamlessly connect key areas of the reserve while preserving the integrity of its surroundings.
Spanning 786 feet, this suspension bridge was engineered to blend into the natural environment. Our team led every phase of the suspension bridge construction, applying advanced techniques in bridge erection, geometry control, and cable installation.
To protect the sensitive ecosystem below, we employed an overhead trolley crane on a highline system—an innovative solution that allowed us to install the cables and superstructure with minimal environmental impact. This method ensured that the gorge’s wildlife and terrain remained undisturbed throughout the build.
